Information Resources
Resource is an available
source of wealth or
knowledge. A resource is a
reserve
supply that can be drawn upon when needed. The ability to deal
resourcefully with
unusual problems.
"Life is a Fact Finding Mission."
There are approximately 3.5 Billion Facts so far.
Warning: Just like with all words of advice, you have to shop
around and do some
research.
Always try to use multiple websites for
verifying information, and always get a second opinion
from a
professional source if possible.
Because even websites like
wikipedia and search engines like
google
cannot be fully trusted. But of course Google and Wiki are my
friends, and like everyone else in the world, I too have a couple of
friends who can be a bit of an as*hole sometimes, but I stick with my
friends because they still have incredible
potential, and I know they will
eventually escape from the dark side and come back to the light, where
everything is incredibly bright.
Bright
being splendid light. Characterized by happiness or gladness. Full or promise.
Characterized by quickness and ease in learning.

Aardvark Search Engine was a social search service that connected
users live with friends or friends-of-friends who were able to answer
their questions, also known as a
knowledge market. Users submitted questions via the Aardvark website,
email or instant messenger and Aardvark identified and facilitated a live
chat or email conversation with one or more topic experts in the asker's
extended social network. Aardvark was used for asking subjective questions
for which human judgment or recommendation was desired. It was also used
extensively for technical support questions. Users could also review
question and answer history and other settings on the Aardvark website.
Google acquired Aardvark and then killed it.

Integrated Library System
is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track
items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. An
ILS usually comprises a relational database, software to interact with
that database, and two graphical user interfaces (one for patrons, one for
staff). Most ILSes separate software functions into discrete programs
called modules, each of them integrated with a unified interface. Examples
of modules might include: acquisitions (ordering, receiving, and invoicing
materials). cataloging (classifying and indexing materials). circulation
(lending materials to patrons and receiving them back). serials (tracking
magazine, journals, and newspaper holdings). online public access catalog
or OPAC (public user interface). Each patron and item has a unique ID in
the database that allows the ILS to track its activity.
Library Automation
refers to the use of computer to automate the typical procedures of
libraries such as
cataloging
and circulation.
Library
Circulation comprises the activities around the lending of library
books and other material to users of a lending library. A circulation or
lending department is one of the key departments of a library. The main
public service point is the circulation desk or loans desk, usually found
near the main entrance of a library. It provides lending services and
facilities for return of loaned items. Renewal of materials and payment of
fines are also handled at the circulation desk. Circulation staff may
provide basic search and reference services, though more in-depth
questions are usually referred to reference librarians at the library
reference desk. The circulation desk is in most cases staffed by library
support staff instead of professional librarians.

House of Knowledge was an ancient university of the Fatimid Caliphate
(today's Egypt), built in
1004 CE as a
library and converted by the Fatimid Imam-Caliph al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah to
a state university in the same year. The library's collection was so vast
that historian, Ibn Abi Tayyi’ described it as a "Wonder of the world".
Historian Ahmed Bin Ali Maqrizi says "The House of Wisdom in Cairo did not
open its doors to the public except before the furnishing, decoration and
beautification of all the doors and corridors, and many servants were
appointed. And the number of shelves in forty cabinets, each one of them
could accommodate about eighteen thousand books. And (the shelves) were
open, and books accessible to everyone. And one who wants a book, then the
book can be easily found by him. If a book cannot be found by oneself, one
can seek the help of hired handlers." In keeping with the Islamic
tradition of knowledge, the Fatimids collected books on a variety of
subjects and their libraries attracted the attention of scholars from
across the world. The Imam-Caliph al-Hakim was a great patron of learning
and provided paper, pens, ink and inkstands without charge to all those
who wished to study there.
House of Wisdom refers to either a major Abbasid public academy and
intellectual center in Baghdad or to a large private library belonging to
the Abbasid Caliphs during the Islamic Golden Age. The House of Wisdom and
its
contents were destroyed in the
Siege of Baghdad in 1258, leaving very little in the way of
archaeological evidence for the House of Wisdom, such that most knowledge
about it is derived from the works of contemporary scholars of the era
such as Al-Tabari and Ibn al-Nadim.
"Libraries use to be about knowledge but some libraries are more like a
public book store with a couple of added features".
Libraries three main functions is
Knowledge Preservation,
Knowledge Management and the
Promotion of Learning. But
most libraries don't fully understand knowledge or the purpose of
education, or the value of either one.
Knowledge Base.
Whole Earth Catalog was an American counterculture magazine and
product catalog published by Stewart Brand several times a year between
1968 and 1972, and occasionally thereafter, until 1998. The magazine
featured essays and articles, but was primarily focused on product
reviews. The editorial focus was on self-sufficiency, ecology, alternative
education, "
do it yourself" (DIY), and holism, and
featured the slogan "
access to tools".
While WEC listed and reviewed a wide range of products (clothing, books,
tools, machines, seeds, etc.), it did not sell any of the products
directly. Instead, the vendor's contact information was listed alongside
the item and its review. This is why, while not a regularly published
periodical, numerous editions and updates were required to keep price and
availability information up to date. An item is listed in the catalog if
it is
deemed:
Useful as a tool, Relevant to
independent education, High
quality or low
cost,
Not already common knowledge,
Easily available by mail. The 1968 catalog divided itself into
seven broad sections: Understanding
Whole Systems.
Shelter and
Land Use.
Industry and
Craft.
Communications.
Community.
Nomadics.
Learning.
Dictionaries
Dictionary is a
reference work containing a list of words in
alphabetical order, giving
their
meaning, translation and/or other information.
Glossary is an
alphabetical list of terms or words found
in or relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations;
a brief dictionary.
Glossary
is an alphabetical list of terms in a particular
domain of knowledge with the
definitions for those terms. Traditionally, a glossary appears at the end
of a book and includes terms within that book that are either newly
introduced, uncommon, or specialized. While glossaries are most commonly
associated with non-fiction books, in some cases, fiction novels may come
with a glossary for unfamiliar terms. A bilingual glossary is a list of
terms in one language defined in a second language or glossed by synonyms
(or at least near-synonyms) in another language. In a general sense, a
glossary contains explanations of concepts relevant to a certain field of
study or action. In this sense, the term is related to the notion of
ontology. Automatic methods have been also provided that transform a
glossary into an ontology or a computational lexicon.

Internet Quotes - Information Sayings
"If you have a question, just ask the Internet"
What is the Internet? -
Collaborative Sharing
"The internet is like having a best friend who knows everything. A
friend who just loves sharing everything that
they know, and only when you want to know
something. The internet speaks only when spoken
too. It may not always be right, but it's always there."
"It's true that the Internet doesn't have all the answers, but you
will find more answers on the Internet then
anywhere else on the planet."
"I didn't learn everything from the Internet, but I did learn a
lot about a lot of things because of the internet."
Social Networks
"Even with the internet having so much
knowledge and information, there are times I will learn more from just
being around people and having good conversations, the internet will never
replace the incredible benefits of human interaction."
"There's always a Question. I might not have all the
answers, but with the internet I can always find someone who has an answer, or
at the least, find someone who has another question
that would possibly help me find an answer."
Search Technology
-
Information Overload
"I might not have all the answers but I do have a lot of questions
that you may have never thought of asking, which
could ultimately help you find the answer you're
looking for."
"There's always a Question but there's not always an
Answer, unless 'I Don't Know' is an answer,
then I guess I have an answer for everything."
"One of the great things about the
Internet is asking one question ends up
answering 10 questions"
"Answers, or
understanding, builds framework, so knowing what
you're building is important."
"In life you are either looking for answers or
believing that you have found the answers.
Celebrating life is something you do in between
those two moments, when you're not looking for
something and you're not believing in something,
just experiencing."
"Every new bit of information I find adds to my understanding of
the world, like a piece to a puzzle, the more
pieces you have the easier it is to see and
understand what the whole picture is, which
gives you a better chance on making the right decisions."
"
The internet is the
smartest person I know, its collective
intelligence far exceeds any human I have ever
met. But I still need to improve the internet
because I know it could be even smarter. And
when I see people use the internet as a toy, I'm
thinking abuse, waste and ignorance, just like
our current education system, what goes around
comes around."
"Of course I can, I'm the Question Man" -
Questioning
"Information will always lead you somewhere."
"Information Fixes Everything."
Education Quotes -
Life Quotes
"When seeking help, just don't look for people who provide help, you
should also look for other people who need help
too, because sometimes, people who need help can
also help you. When you're helping others,
sometimes you're also helping yourself at the
same time."
Remove a Ring that is stuck on your finger using
string or thin shoelace (youtube)
The Process of
Questioning:
You don't have to know everything, you don't
have to go through every door or click on every
hyperlink. You just have to know
what questions to ask
and when to ask them.
And then
analyze the answers
to the best of your ability.
Skepticism -
Methodology
And don't forget that
asking for help is just
another question. Other peoples knowledge and
abilities are an extremely valuable resource and
everyone has the ability to contribute to this
resource. What good is knowledge if you never
share it?
